RATES FOR MULTI-UNIT DWELLINGS ALMOST FOUR TIMES THAT OF DETACHED DWELLINGS

The latest HIA Housing Scorecard shows the ACT had almost four times the number of multi-unit dwelling starts compared with detached dwelling starts over the 2015-16 financial year, Shadow Minister for Planning and Development Nicole Lawder said today.

“In the ACT there were approximately 1010 detached dwelling starts compared to 3840 multi-unit dwelling starts,” Ms Lawder said.

“The national split between the two different types of housing was roughly half and half with approximately 115,000 detached dwelling starts and 114,000 multi-unit dwelling starts.

“The ACT figures clearly show a poor mix of land supply in the territory when compared nationally.

“The relatively low starts for new detached dwellings is a real concern for home buyers in the ACT.

“The Labor-Greens Government needs to consider their land release program to offer greater choice for home buyers particularly first home buyers,” Ms Lawder concluded.
