GREYHOUND RACING TO CONTINUE IN THE ACT

Following repeated questioning from the Canberra Liberals, the Minister responsible for Gaming and Racing in the ACT, today confirmed that greyhound racing will not be banned after July 1 2017. The clarification is welcome for the industry, Shadow Minister for Gaming and Racing Mark Parton said today.

“After months of uncertainty for the greyhound racing industry, in Assembly question time today, the Minister finally gave clarity that greyhound racing will still be legal in ACT after July 1,” Mr Parton said.

“The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club is determined to continue operations after July 1 and the certainty that they will be able to continue racing is welcomed.

“Whilst the Club is still disappointed that the ACT government has chosen to remove funding, they continue to be open to discussions with the government on the future structure of the racing industry and positively addressing welfare and integrity issues.

“The Canberra Greyhound Racing Club has always been willing to engage in positive discussions to improve the standards of integrity in the industry and it is disappointing that the government has chosen not to take part in these discussions,” Mr Parton concluded.
