The blatant hypocrisy of the CFMEU regarding the use of labour hire companies has been on full display through their recent evidence to an ACT Assembly Committee hearing, Leader of the Opposition Alistair Coe said today.
“At the same time the CFMEU claims to be championing the rights of ACT workers, they have been complicit in bringing in interstate union friendly labour hire companies to work on the Labor Government’s light rail project,” Mr Coe said.
“Rather than light rail being built by Canberrans, out-of-town companies and labour hire firms have been awarded the vast majority of the work.
“This Labor Government is in fact the largest single user of labour hire arrangements.
“While the Government claims that lots of local businesses are working on the project, locals have only been engaged for occasional or piecemeal work.
“In fact, anyone who drives down Northbourne Avenue would be hard-pressed to see an ACT number plate on any of the vehicles.
“The CFMEU and ACT Government have brushed aside local businesses to get union preferred companies.
“This is hypocrisy at its finest and it’s a disgrace,” Mr Coe concluded.
