Fitzharris’ back down on bus services does not go far enough

Transport Minister Meegan Fitzharris’ partial back down on her cuts to dedicated school buses does not go far enough to guarantee children’s safety, Shadow Transport Minister Candice Burch said.

“Many school principals, teachers, and parents raised serious concerns about the safety of young school children, but Ms Fitzharris repeatedly dismissed these concerns as scaremongering by the Opposition,” Miss Burch said.

“Ms Fitzharris’ reinstatement of some dedicated school bus services is the first admission that her bus cuts threatened children’s safety.

“While the Canberra Liberals are pleased that some of these services will be reinstated, Ms Fitzharris must do more to ensure our children are safe when travelling to and from school.

“It’s disappointing that the government had to be dragged towards actually listening to parents and schools, and responding to their concerns. Of course, Ms Fitzharris should have engaged properly with schools and parents much earlier in the process.

“This whole process has been handled very poorly. I think Ms Fitzharris owes the school community an apology for putting them through this ordeal.

“The Canberra Liberals will continue to fight for more dedicated school bus services for our children,” Miss Burch concluded.
