On Saturday Senator the Hon. Zed Seselja has been preselected unopposed to stand again as the first Senate candidate for the Canberra Liberals in the next federal election.
Senator Seselja was first elected to the Senate in 2013. Since then, he has served as the Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs and is currently the Assistant Minster for Science, Jobs and Innovation.
“It has been an honour to be able to represent Canberrans as part of the Coalition team in the Australian Parliament, and I am very grateful to be re-endorsed by the members of the Canberra Liberals this morning,” Senator Seselja said.
“The Coalition Government has a long list of achievements we are very proud of since being elected to office in 2013. We stopped the boats, cut taxes for 3.2 million businesses and 500,000 middle income earners, have record funding in health and education and we have the lowest proportion of working age Australians on welfare in two decades.”
“As Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs I worked on adoption reform which is seeing a turnaround in adoption numbers, delivered a Multicultural Statement focused on integration, reformed the settlement of refugees to improve education and employment outcomes, and delivered a large boost in homelessness funding.”
“Locally, I fought to ensure the Department of Immigration and Border Protection remained in Belconnen. We have invested in a new building for the Department of Social Services to keep 2,000 jobs in Tuggeranong, and we have committed to bringing a Government Agency to Gungahlin.”
“I personally drove planning reforms which will allow Tuggeranong to expand and deliver affordable housing for the south of Canberra. We are also funding feasibility studies for the Monaro Highway and Pialligo Avenue to properly prepare for population growth in our region.”
“We have delivered almost $80 million to cleaning up our lakes and waterways and delivered record funding for fixing dangerous road black spots in the ACT.”
“The local economy is booming, with 19,200 more jobs in the ACT than September 2013 and the participation rate in the workforce is amongst the highest in the Nation.”
“I will continue to fight for the growth of our great city, and will continue to fight to protect the family unit, freedom of speech and religion, and to provide more support and less regulation for small business.”
“I am pleased to have Robert Gunning as my running mate on the Senate ticket for the ACT. Robert has a brilliant mind for business, and brings a great deal of experience and expertise to the Liberal team.”
