The release of today’s Productivity Commission inquiry report into Early Childhood Education and Care should prompt the ACT government to focus more on childcare costs for Canberra families struggling with cost of living pressures, Shadow Minister for Family and Community Services Nicole Lawder said today.
“The report proposes the current childcare system, which features multiple childcare payments be combined into a single subsidy. The ACT Labor government should take notice and make decisions to alleviate childcare costs,” Ms Lawder said.
“The reality is that Canberra families currently struggle to find childcare at a location, price, quality and for the hours that they want. A single child-based subsidy that is means tested and paid directly to the family’s choice of approved services could alleviate some of that difficulty.
“I’m considering the recommendations of the report and if implemented, what they would mean for Canberra’s families. It’s time for Andrew Barr and ACT Labor to take action and help Canberra families struggling with rising costs,” Ms Lawder concluded.
