Andrew Barr’s mismanagement of the ACT Budget is set to hit Canberra families even harder as increasing debt and deficit puts pressure on the government to increase everyday fees and charges, Shadow Treasurer Brendan Smyth said today.
“The worsening budget position will put more pressure on families as government fees and charges rise. The ACT Budget deficit is the second worst of all the states and territories. Putting Mr Fluffy costs aside, the budget position deteriorated $53 million mid year,” Mr Smyth said.
“ACT Labor and particularly Andrew Barr have mismanaged ACT finances and will continue to do so with the ongoing wasteful spending on light rail. We can be certain that government fees and charges will continue to rise under Andrew Barr as he grapples to manage taxpayers’ money.
“We can be sure that the poorly managed budget will put upward pressure on:
- Rates (which are tripling)
- Car registration
- Taxi charges
- Drivers licences
- Parking fees
- Health costs
“I’ll be moving a motion in the Legislative Assembly today calling on Andrew Barr to come clean with Canberrans about the true impact of his budget mismanagement.
“Andrew Barr needs to understand that his mismanagement is making life tougher for Canberrans who are forced to deal with increasing fees and charges and a higher cost of living. It’s obvious he doesn’t have a solution,” Mr Smyth concluded.
