Bring back dedicated school buses urgently

Recent reports of a young child getting lost on his bus trip home from school once again highlight the need for dedicated school bus services for school children.
“The Labor-Greens Government is celebrating the actions of the bus driver, while continuing to ignore the very real concerns of parents across Canberra,” Shadow Minister for Transport Candice Burch said.
“We commend and thank the bus driver for going above and beyond, detouring across the city to ensure the child got home safely.
“However, this situation highlights the serious concerns parents have about young children having to navigate bus interchanges and service changes, since the government cut dozens of dedicated school bus services across Canberra.
“There have been hundreds, if not thousands, of submissions from parents and families asking for their dedicated school buses back, but the Minister refuses to listen.
“Despite children being confused and lost on the new network almost 9 months after its rollout, more than 50 primary schools are still without any dedicated school buses, and parents continue to be concerned about the safety of their kids.
“While this story fortunately had a happy ending, this will not always be the case. The Canberra Liberals have committed to restore dedicated school buses to keep kids safe and give parents peace of mind. The Minister should do the same,” Miss Burch said.
