Canberra Hospital emergency department patients endure longest waits

More than half of all emergency department patients at The Canberra Hospital are not treated on time.

After questioning by Shadow Health Minister Vicki Dunne in Annual Reports hearings today, it was confirmed only 43 per cent of people presenting to The Canberra Hospital ED were seen on time, below the ACT average of 46 per cent.

“Canberrans are paying more than ever before in rates and taxes, yet the Barr Government is failing to deliver timely health care,” Mrs Dunne said.

“I worry that long waits in the emergency department will lead to adverse medical outcomes for patients, including mental health patients who are waiting on average 16.2 hours to be seen.

“The Barr Government’s incompetence is putting patient lives at risk and has created a stressful working environment for our dedicated hospital staff.

“Canberra patients and hospital staff deserve more respect,” Mrs Dunne said.
