The Canberra Liberals will fund the continued success of the Canberra Area Theatre (CAT) Awards to the tune of $100,000 over four years if elected later this year, Shadow Minister for Arts Brendan Smyth said today.

“The CAT Awards provide invaluable recognition for non-professional performing artists in the ACT who are integral to the fabric of Canberra’s dance, theatre and music scene,” Mr Smyth said.

“If elected, we’ll fund $25,000 for four years starting in our first budget.

“The awards provide recognition of outstanding theatre company performances and give much needed exposure to emerging talent in our city. The talent isn’t limited to acting, it encompasses choreography, costume, lighting design, technical production and directing.

“Currently the Awards don’t receive any direct ACT government funding, but the Canberra Liberals believe in the contribution the arts and culture sector makes to the wider community.

“I’m proud to be backing this funding policy to strengthen the future of the CAT Awards and look forward to the continued vibrancy of arts and culture in Canberra,” Mr Smyth concluded.
