Canberra Liberals pay tribute to Don Furner Senior

The Canberra Liberals honour Mr Don Furner OAM for his extraordinary contribution to Canberra and the region, said Alistair Coe MLA, Leader of the Canberra Liberals.

“As the founding coach of the Raiders, Don Furner played a significant role in establishing a team that would become part of our city’s identity. With Furner as coach, the team developed a strong culture, signed significant players and played in the finals in 1984 and 1987,” Mr Coe said.

“Don was awarded the order of Australia in 1989 and the Australian Sports Medal in 2000. He played for Queensland and Australia and his coaching career included the Queanbeyan Blues and Australia.

“The Canberra Liberals recognise Don Furner’s extraordinary contribution to Canberra.

“My thoughts are with his family and the Raiders community at this sad time,” concluded Mr Coe.
