Children’s education, development and wellbeing paramount

Our children’s education, development and wellbeing, particularly during these unprecedented times, is paramount. The Canberra Liberals believe that parents should be able to send their children to their regular school if they want to.

During this unsettling time, it’s important that families are supported, and that our children’s education, development and wellbeing is looked after.

The advice consistently provided by the experts, including publicly advocated by the Commonwealth’s Chief Medical Officer and the Australian Medical Association throughout the pandemic, has been that our schools are safe and they should be open.

We know that COVID-19 has placed additional pressures on many families and many children have struggled with the disruptions and social isolation. Many children will benefit from the familiarity and stability provided by their own school environment, supported by their own teachers and being around their own peers.

Knowing their children are safe and receiving a good education at their regular school will provide parents with some peace of mind.

We acknowledge and thank our teachers for their work in adapting to an online platform under the extraordinary pressure of this health threat and we want to support them to safely get back into the classroom.

Like any workplace, appropriate health practices should be implemented at schools to provide a safe working environment for teachers and school staff, including supporting particularly vulnerable teachers to work safely from home.

These are unprecedented times and there are no easy decisions. We must all work together as a community to ensure our children’s ongoing education, development and wellbeing.
