City clinic needed to help homeless access COVID-19 testing

Homeless Canberrans would have easier access to testing for COVID-19 with a City-based testing clinic, Shadow Minister for Housing Mark Parton said.

Recognising the challenges facing homeless people in Civic, a select committee on the COVID-19 pandemic response chaired by Opposition Leader Alistair Coe has recommended the ACT Government prioritise the city centre as the next location for a COVID testing facility.

“The pandemic has presented enormous challenges for everyone, including Canberra’s rough sleepers,” Mr Parton said.

“Canberra’s homeless are some of our most vulnerable and least mobile people. They face the increased challenge of being unable to quarantine at home or access clean water and soap which many of us take for granted. They need easy access to testing.

“We shouldn’t forget the vulnerable in our community. We need to expand our testing capacity to the city to give homeless Canberrans easy access to testing,” Mr Parton said.
