Coalition Senators, Seselja and Lindgren, today welcome the public comments made by Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull on the need for adoption reform in Australia.
Earlier this year Senator Seselja and Senator Lindgren began advocating for a serious review into out of home care and adoption practices in Australia, after their involvement in the Community Affairs Committee inquiry on the issue. The two Senators have also raised the issue directly with the Prime Minister.
“The statistics are overwhelming. As I have said previously, in Australia in June 2013 there was 27,924 children who had been in out of home care for 2 years or more, yet only 210 local adoptions occurred around the country in that same 12 month period. These numbers show the stark reality of the situation and why it is so important for us to make this a priority of our government and the state and territory governments” Senator Seselja said.
“There is a clear bias in the system against adoption but the sole focus should be on providing vulnerable children with a safe, secure and stable family home as Prime Minister Turnbull indicated in his public comments yesterday.” Senator Lindgren said.
“The sheer number of children in out of home care is alarming. Going from foster carer to foster carer does not provide the stability that children need.’ Senator Seselja said.
“We have seen far too many times the tragic outcomes of children not coming first, the case of Chloe Valentine in a prime example of this. The Coroner’s report on Chloe’s death said “under supply of suitable and willing foster parents leads me to the very firm opinion that permanent removal to adoptive parents must have a place in the child protection system” Senator Seselja said.
“We recommended earlier this year that COAG consider using the NSW out of home care regime as the foundation of a national approach, to provide clearer pathways into adoption for children in the out of home care system long-term. Additionally we called on our government, in line with its stance on inter-country adoptions, to use its leadership at COAG to promote policies which will make local adoption a more viable pathway and we pleased that Prime Minister Turnbull and the Minister for Social Services, Christian Porter are showing clear intent to tackle this serious issue” Senator Seselja and Senator Lindgren concluded.
