ACT Leader of the Opposition, Alistair Coe has urged Andrew Barr to spend taxpayers’ money wisely as the best way to address persistent financial deficits. Mr Coe’s call follows warnings from senior economist, Dr Stephen Anthony, and former senior ACT Treasury official, Dr Khalid Ahmed, about the Territory’s finances.
“Dr Ahmed has described the trends in our budget as unsustainable. Andrew Barr has repeatedly promised to do something about it. In 2013 he promised a surplus in 2015-16. In 2016 he is promising this will be achieved by 2018-19,” Mr Coe said today.
“The bottom line is that in 2015-16 the Territory’s net borrowing was $631 million. Andrew Barr needs to explain what choices he will be making to ensure our public finances do not continue in such a state.
“We know that the ACT Labor/Greens Government has no difficulty with taxing and charging Canberrans more.
“The Canberra Liberals are focussed on ensuring taxpayers’ money is used wisely to provide efficient, high quality local services rather than relying on ever higher taxes and charges” Mr Coe concluded.
