The cost of renting a house in Canberra is only going to get worse, Shadow Housing Minister Mark Parton has warned.
“The Liberals have repeatedly said that renters, who are now paying on average $560 per week for a home, will be forced to pick up the cost of Labor’s ongoing hikes to rates and land tax,” Mr Parton said.
“ACT Labor has already put many property owners in a finically unviable situation through increases to rates and land tax, which as we’ve seen is also negatively impacting renters.
“I have no doubt the situation will get worse after Labor and the Greens push through certain changes to the Residential Tenancies Act which they say will favour tenants.
“Weakening protections for people who own rental properties will drive rents even higher and make it more difficult for people to secure rental accommodation.
“If they don’t tone down extreme elements of proposed changes to the Residential Tenancies Act they risk further exacerbating Canberra’s rental affordability crisis,” Mr Parton said.
