Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation Steve Doszpot wants answers as to why the Canberra Demons versus GWS Reserves NEAFL match was moved at short notice from Manuka Oval to Queanbeyan on Sunday. The match was scheduled as a curtain raiser to the GWS versus Port Adelaide AFL match.
“I have received complaints from parents and supporters of local AFL who were disappointed that the young Demons side wasn’t given the opportunity to show their capabilities in front of thousands of people at Manuka Oval,” Mr Doszpot said today.
“More generally there is concern in the local sporting community about the lack of opportunities for local teams to play on Manuka Oval, both AFL and cricket. That concern extends to the hiring fees that clubs now face if they want to play there.
“Both players and spectators feel increasingly disenfranchised from playing on the historic Manuka Oval. I call on Yvette Berry to explain what happened on Sunday and ensure that local sporting teams have the opportunity to benefit from big games.
“We should not forget the historic significance of Manuka Oval for local AFL and cricket in particular. Manuka Oval should be available for broader community use as well as the big matches,” Mr Doszpot concluded.
