Further Evidence Emphasises Need For Auditor-General Review of ED Waiting Times

Following Katy Gallagher’s failures as Health Minister, ACT Opposition Leader Jeremy Hanson will today move a motion in the Assembly, calling on the Government to agree to an Auditor-General’s performance audit of Emergency Department (ED) waiting times as a matter of priority.

“A review of the Nurse-led Walk-in Centre at the Canberra Hospital found that Katy Gallagher ignored evidence that it would create more pressure on the Emergency Department,” Mr Hanson said today.

“In addition to this it has been revealed that Katy Gallagher has also ignored advice regarding the establishment of a paediatric stream in the ED.

“Now as a result of Katy Gallagher’s recklessness in ignoring evidence and advice from her department and health officials, we have seen our ED waiting times get progressively worse, exactly as the warnings predicated.

“In June 2010 the Canberra Liberals called on the Auditor-General to conduct an audit of ‘Waiting Lists for Elective Surgery and Medical Treatment,’ since the release of that report there have been improvements to elective surgery waiting times. Now we need the same action in our ED’s.

“The proof that we need a review into ED waiting times continues to stack up. There is a serious need for this Government to fix the problems they have created and get our health system back to being one of the best in the country not one of the worst,” Mr Hanson concluded.
