Senator Zed Seselja has called on the ACT Chief Minister to be honest to the community about the level of health funding, following figures she put out this morning alleging that funding would be ripped out of the ACT. Changes to funding provided to the ACT are the result of the deal signed by the Chief Minister with the former Labor Government and Ms Gallagher’s failure to reach the agreed health targets.
Overall Commonwealth Hospital funding provided to the ACT Government will grow from the projected $232.4m in the 2013-14 MYEFO to a budget forecast of $311.1 million in 2017-18.
Under the Health Agreements that the Chief Minister signed with the former Labor Government, the ACT will see a change in the funding provided on population forecasts.
“The Chief Minister needs to spend her energy advocating on behalf of Canberrans, rather than scaremongering with alleged figures that are based on agreements she signed the territory up to,” stated Senator Seselja.
The 2014-15 Federal Budget shows that in 2013 – 14, the ACT will receive $43.8m more than expected in funding, followed by $3.8m in 2014-15. The budget also provides for additional funding based on performance. The performance targets set were agreed to by the Chief Minister in her deal with former Prime Minister Rudd.
“ACT Health under the Chief Minister’s direction has failed to meet a number of targets that would have ensured that Canberrans would have access to additional health funding in the past and in the future. It is still possible for Ms Gallagher to achieve this additional funding if she focuses on service delivery,” continued Senator Seselja.
“The community deserves top quality health services in the ACT and the ACT Labor Government’s continued failure to deliver these services is not only affecting their health but also affecting ongoing health funding,” concluded Senator Seselja.
