GOVERNMENT NEEDS TO EXPLAIN ANY PLANS FOR TRAM TAX

Andrew Barr needs be upfront with Canberrans about his plans to charge them more so he can build a $14 billion tram network, Shadow Minister for Transport Alistair Coe said today.

“Given the massive cost associated with trams and judging by funding models in other places, a tram tax, or a levy on rates is a logical way for Andrew Barr to be paying for his lavish outlay on trams,” Mr Coe said.

“Andrew Barr needs to outline what options he is considering regarding imposing a tram tax on Canberrans.

“We know that Andrew Barr is keen to increase revenue by using ‘value capture’ policies. He must detail what taxation options have or are being considered in order to fund the tram.

“Home and unit owners have to contend with tripling rates and Andrew Barr needs to be honest about whether he’ll tax them hundreds of dollars more each year for trams that will have no benefit for most of the population.

“I look forward to hearing from Andrew Barr and his clarification for Canberrans about his plans for how he’ll address the cost of trams in Canberra,” Mr Coe concluded.
