Tonight I’ll again be participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout to raise awareness and funds for those in Canberra and right across Australia who sleep rough on the streets, Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Hanson said today.
“Vinnies has done an enormous amount of work helping homeless people throughout its history and the profile of the cause has certainly been raised through the CEO Sleepout initiative over the past 11 years,” Mr Hanson said.
“It’s important that those of us who are lucky in the community recognise that many, for various reasons, find themselves sleeping rough. These people find themselves very isolated and rely heavily on the support of charities like Vinnies.
“During my years in the Army I spent hundreds of nights outdoors sleeping rough and have some understanding of how harsh it can be. I have great sympathy for the hardships of the people who seem to have no choice and are forced to sleep on the streets every night.
“I congratulate Vinnies and all of the people taking part in the Sleepout tonight right across Australia, and I ask Canberrans, if you can, to please give to this wonderful organisation which has given so many people the assistance they need,” Mr Hanson concluded.
