With Canberra experiencing the early stages of another heatwave, the decision by ActewAGL to cancel power interruptions in several suburbs is common sense. Having called for ActewAGL not to cut power to suburbs during the last stretch of extreme heat days, the decision is welcome, Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Hanson said today.
“This change in attitude from ActewAGL is something that has come after community concern and pressure from the media and opposition. The question must be asked as to why the government has been so weak and ineffectual on this important issue of community welfare,” Mr Hanson said.
“I reiterate my call for ActewAGL to conduct an internal review of its policy for outages on extreme heat days. The latest statements from ActewAGL are welcome but a formal policy would prevent the ad hoc approach that has resulted and would better inform the community of when outages might be expected.
“I urge ActewAGL and the Government to put the community first in the coming days with forecasts of extreme heat for the ACT,” Mr Hanson concluded.
