Transport Minister Chris Steel’s decision to cut weekend bus services is a very clear admission that he has been unable to deliver the weekend bus network that was promised to Canberrans, Shadow Transport Minister Candice Burch said.
Since the overhaul of the bus network, we have seen hundreds of services cancelled every weekend, with Canberrans left waiting sometimes up to or more than an hour for services that never arrive.
“The Labor-Greens Government promised more weekend services under the new network,” Miss Burch said.
“Instead, people relying on public transport over the weekend have been forced to wait for long periods, sometimes without knowing if their bus will ever show up.
“Mr Steel has also continuously refused to publish a list of cancelled services, instead instructing Canberrans check the NXTBUS app 90 minutes before their journey.
“Now, rather than fixing driver shortages, the Minister has decided to just cut the weekend services that Canberrans were promised.
“Mr Steel has effectively admitted defeat and proven he is incapable, or unwilling, to fix the staffing problems that his Government has been aware of for years. And with services being cut from 28 September, it is still not clear how the Minister will give passengers certainty that their bus will run over the next six weeks.
“The Labor-Greens Government has again let down weekend workers and the Canberrans who depend on weekend buses to get around our city,” Miss Burch said.
