Leader of the Canberra Liberals Alistair Coe is pushing the ACT Government to urgently release more affordable land so that Canberrans can benefit from the HomeBuilder grant.
The Commonwealth Government is offering $25,000 grants for house and land packages valued at less than $750,000 until 31 December 2020.
Unfortunately, very few ACT families will benefit from the grant for free-standing homes because of the lack of affordable land in Canberra. The Liberals Leader said this is because of the Labor Government agenda to maximise profits through land sales.
Mr Coe will move a motion in the ACT Legislative Assembly today to gain the support from the Labor Party and the Greens to urgently release more affordable land.
“Aspirational Canberrans who dream of owning their own home are being fleeced by the Labor Government’s deliberate strategy to drive up profits through land sales,” Mr Coe said.
“That’s why the ACT Government continues to rake in bigger profits from fewer land sales.
“Hardworking, aspirational Canberrans deserve a better way.
“We need to release more affordable land to help more hardworking, aspirational families and young people get ahead.
“The Labor-Greens Government needs to act urgently to ensure hardworking, aspirational Canberrans don’t miss out,” Mr Coe said.
