Liberals to deliver One Million Trees to ensure a sustainable future for all

As a key pillar of our plan to protect the local environment to ensure we have a sustainable future for all, a Canberra Liberals Government will plant and care for one million trees over the next decade.

A Canberra Liberals Government will also introduce a Green Space Guarantee to make sure that in every suburb, there is precious green space for families and community groups to spread their wings and enjoy their natural surroundings.

Under our plan Canberrans can be assured that we will guarantee green space within a 10-minute walk from home.

The Canberra Liberals will partner with families, community groups, schools, local businesses and community minded Canberrans to ensure Canberra lives up to its name as the Bush Capital.

By contrast, under 19 years of Labor, the number of street and community trees has gone backwards by around 3,000 trees each year, and tree canopy has been slashed from 30 per cent to 21 per cent. And no more obvious is Labor’s neglect of trees than in our new suburbs.

Presenting an oak tree at a local primary school today, the ACT Liberal Leader Alistair Coe and Shadow Minister for Environment Elizabeth Lee said planting and caring for one million trees in the Bush Capital is about protecting our local environment to ensure a sustainable future for all.

“We will future-proof the Bush Capital to ensure a sustainable future for all Canberrans with these real and practical measures,” Mr Coe said.

“The devastating bushfire season and Coronavirus has reminded us how precious our natural environment is for the health and wellbeing of local communities.

“Our long-term vision to plant one million trees and preserve precious green space to ensure all Canberra families and community groups can enjoy the benefits of the fresh outdoors,” Mr Coe said.

Ms Lee said the natural benefits that come with one million trees would improve overall quality of life of Canberrans.

“There are at least one million reasons to plant and care for trees,” Ms Lee said.

“The most obvious benefits of trees are the role they play in carbon reduction, their shade and protection that can reduce temperatures in urban areas and of course, their natural beauty befitting our proud heritage as the Bush Capital.

“One million trees will strengthen and protect Canberra’s air quality and green spaces for generations to come,” Ms Lee said.

The Shadow Minister for Planning Mark Parton said the Canberra Liberals’ Green Space Guarantee will ensure fresh, healthy and modern suburbs throughout the Bush Capital.

“All Canberrans deserve equal access to green spaces – no matter what suburb they live in,” Mr Parton said.

“Nobody wants to live in concrete suburbs but that’s increasingly what’s on offer thanks to 19 years of Labor’s same old tired thinking.

“All Canberrans deserve fresh, green, modern suburbs to ensure a sustainable future,” Mr Parton said.

“Today’s important announcement is a key part of our commitment to delivering real and practical solutions to ensure Canberra is the best place to live, work and raise a family,” Mr Coe concluded.
