Libs Announce Green Bins for Canberrans

  •  Garden waste bin for households at no extra cost
  • $10M for the construction of a processing facility

ACT Opposition Leader Zed Seselja and ACT Shadow Nature Conservation Minister Vicki Dunne announced today that if elected, a Canberra Liberals Government would provide Canberrans with a third bin for garden waste at no additional cost. Mr Seselja said the Canberra Liberals are committed to reducing garden waste in landfills and giving residents better local services.

“Effective waste management and reduction is not only important in protecting our environment, it’s also a vital component of a well-managed city,” Mr Seselja said.

“That’s why a Canberra Liberals Government would give Canberra households a Green Bin for garden waste, as is provided in Queanbeyan, Sydney, and Wollongong.

“We would also provide a capital grant of $10 million for the construction of a garden waste processing facility.

“This initiative would save Canberra home owners up to $400 a year in green waste collection services.

“The green waste would be mulched and sold, offsetting the cost of collection.

“This policy will cost approximately $5.5 million per year,” Mr Seselja concluded.

Mrs Dunne said the Canberra Liberals would test the market to identify a suitable public-private-partnership model to deliver the initiative.

“In 2009-10, 64 New South Wales Councils provided garden waste collection,” Mrs Dunne said.

“So a Canberra Liberals Government would also talk to our regional counterparts about the best ways to collaboratively collect and process other organic waste.

“The Canberra Liberals are committed to improving the environment, and giving Canberrans better local services and lower rates and taxes,” Mrs Dunne concluded.
