ACT Shadow Minister for Sport and Recreation, James Milligan MLA, has welcomed the start of work on the redevelopment of Phillip Oval, originally promised in 2008. The redevelopment will provide improved business, coaching and training opportunities, with plans for Phillip Oval to become the headquarters for AFL Canberra and Cricket ACT, Mr Milligan said today.

“The facility upgrade, promised in 2008 with initial funds allocated in that year, will support the development of elite sports and a diverse range of community programs for cricket and AFL in the ACT,” Mr Milligan said.

“The original funds were for the reconstruction of the playing surface, drainage and irrigation and for a turf cricket wicket.

“More funds were promised in 2015, and it is good to see that work has finally begun.

“We look forward to funds being allocated in the next budget and works following soon after for the promised resurfacing and drainage improvements at Gungahlin Oval,” Mr Milligan concluded.
