The Leader of the Canberra Liberals Alistair Coe has welcomed the Federal Government’s $130 billion commitment to keep Australians employed throughout the virus crisis.
“We are living in extraordinarily difficult times,” Mr Coe said.
“The coronavirus isn’t just a threat to the health of so many Canberrans, it has dramatically challenged our way of life. Thousands of Canberrans have lost their livelihoods as local businesses can no longer afford to employ their staff and pay their bills.
“The JobKeeper scheme is a significant federal government commitment that will help protect thousands of local jobs in Canberra.
“There are other measures the ACT Government could implement to help protect the livelihoods that so many Canberrans rely on. We must expedite the passage of a commercial rates waiver for businesses that have ceased or significantly decreased trade as a result of the virus. This will significantly reduce pressure on businesses and their employees, helping them to survive ‘hibernation’.
“The ACT Government needs to do everything it can to save jobs and local businesses. That’s why the Canberra Liberals will continue to make the case for a commercial rates waiver, and other measures to help save the livelihoods of tens of thousands Canberrans,” Mr Coe said.
