Vale Malcolm Fraser

The passing of former Liberal Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser today marks a time to reflect on the work of a great servant for Australia, Leader of the Opposition Jeremy Hanson said today.

“Malcolm Fraser was a giant of Australian politics and I express my condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at his passing,” Mr Hanson said.

“After coming to power as Australia’s 22nd Prime Minister following the Whitlam Government’s dismissal, he led the country until 1983 when he retired from politics.

“His ascension to the office of Prime Minister in 1975 came at one of the most difficult and poignant times in Australia’s political history. Mr Fraser guided the country out of tough economic times experienced during the early and mid 1970s.

“He also formed CARE Australia as part of the worldwide humanitarian CARE network in 1987 and was chairman from 1987 until 2002.

“Mr Fraser remained an active citizen right up until his death and deserves to be remembered fondly and with all the gratitude of all Australians. Vale Malcolm Fraser,” Mr Hanson concluded.
