Canberra Liberals Leader, and Shadow Minister for Transport Mark Parton has welcomed the Government’s decision to refer the troubled MyWay+ rollout to the Auditor-General, saying the move comes after an inquiry initiated by the Member for Yerrabi, Leanne Castley, exposed significant failures in the project’s planning and delivery.
“The launch of MyWay+ was a complete fiasco and, more than a year on, the system is still not fully functional,” Mr Parton said.
“Even Transport Minister Chris Steel now accepts that independent scrutiny is needed into how this occurred on his watch.”
The Government today tabled its response to the inquiry in the Legislative Assembly and agreed to a number of recommendations, including a formal examination by the Auditor-General (Recommendation 2). It also accepted the need for greater transparency around whether major projects are being delivered on time and on budget (Recommendation 5).
The inquiry made a series of damning findings, concluding that MyWay+ was “clearly not ready for launch” and “did not work properly.” It attributed the failures to poor project management, flawed decision-making, weak design, poor judgement and what it described as “meaningless” community testing, all of which undermined public confidence in the Territory’s public transport system.
In October 2025, the Legislative Assembly censured Minister Steel over the handling of MyWay+. While Minister Steel accepted responsibility for the rollout, he declined to resign.
“Serving as a government minister requires the highest standards of competence and public trust,” Mr Parton said.
“It is disappointing that Minister Steel has still not taken responsibility by stepping aside.”
