The Canberra Liberals have committed to introducing a dedicated Suicide Prevention Bill, delivering a coordinated, accountable and long-term response to one of the most urgent public health challenges facing the ACT.
The legislation will establish a clear, whole-of-government framework for suicide prevention, ensuring that efforts across health, education, justice, and community services are better aligned, evidence-based, and focused on early intervention and support.
Announcing the commitment, Canberra Liberals Leader and Shadow Minister for Health and Mental Health, Mark Parton said, “Too many families have felt the devastating impact of suicide. This Bill is about turning words into action, putting in place the structures and accountability needed to save lives.”
The proposed legislation will:
- Establish a statutory suicide prevention framework to guide government action
- Embed a whole-of-government responsibility, with clear roles and accountability
- Strengthen data collection, transparency, and public reporting
- Prioritise early intervention, community-based support, and at-risk groups
- Ensure lived-experience voices are central to policy design and delivery.
“This cannot be tackled in silos. It requires leadership and coordination. This legislation ensures suicide prevention is treated with the urgency it deserves,” Mr Parton said.
The Bill will also seek to strengthen partnerships with community organisations, frontline services, and mental health professionals, recognising that effective prevention must be locally informed and person-centred.
Mr Parton emphasised that this commitment reflects a broader focus on improving mental health outcomes and supporting vulnerable individuals and families in the Canberra community.
“Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy. We have a responsibility to do better, and this is a critical step toward saving lives,” Mr Parton said.
