Celebrating 100 years since Edith Cowan elected to an Australian Parliament

Today marks 100 years since Edith Cowan, the first woman, was elected to an Australian Parliament.

Canberra Liberals Leader Elizabeth Lee said looking back at the accomplishments of Edith Cowan provides an opportunity to recognise and celebrate the achievements of women in politics but also acknowledge how much more work that needs to be done.

“Our parliaments - at all levels - should reflect, as much as possible, the diversity of the community we serve,” said Ms Lee.

“As a woman, and as an Asian Australian, I want the next generation of women leaders to know that they belong here; in any place where decisions are made that affect them and our community.

“My hope is that by the end of my political service, my Asian heritage and my gender will not make headlines because it will be the norm.

“Just this week we celebrated International Women’s Day that encouraged women to follow their aspirations and #ChooseToChallenge.

“Edith Cowan chose to challenge, and we are all the better for it,” Ms Lee concluded.
