Canberra remains the most expensive capital city in Australia to rent a home, according to the Domain Rental Report for the March 2021 quarter.
The report found Canberrans are paying up to $150 more per week than renters in other states. The ACT median asking rent for a house is $600, and for a unit is $500, up 4.2 per cent year-on-year.
Shadow Housing Minister, Mark Parton, said the Labor-Greens Government’s lack of action on housing affordability is leaving behind vulnerable Canberrans.
“Massive increases to rates, a land release program designed to gouge Canberrans, and years of failure to provide more public and community housing have all worked to push up the cost of rent in Canberra,” Mr Parton said.
“This Labor-Greens Government continues to talk about rental affordability in Canberra, but when it comes to providing solutions, they are absent.
“This government needs to acknowledge the rental crisis it has created and embrace new policy ideas because many Canberrans are being left behind.
“There is clearly a housing and rental crisis in the ACT and many of our most vulnerable Canberrans are suffering as a consequence,” Mr Parton concluded.
