The Burns Club have submitted a development application to build approximately 98 carparks that would be located directly on the Tuggeranong little athletics field.
The field located on Kett Street Kambah is vital for the Tuggeranong Little Athletics Association and used for shotput, discus, long jump, and triple jump events.
Liberal MLA for Brindabella Nicole Lawder said not only does this proposal disadvantage Tuggeranong children participating in community sport but is also unnecessary.
“Anyone who has been to the Burns Club would know that there is ample parking available at the club and in its surrounds,” said Ms Lawder.
“Frankly this proposal is ludicrous and an unfair attack on community sport in Tuggeranong.
“This space is an important community asset that has helped produce both Canberra and Australian-level athletes.
“It would be not only shameful if this government were to allow this proposal to pass but also incredibly hypocritical after all its anti-car and pro-green space rhetoric.
“The Labor-Greens Government need to kick this application to the curb and show support to the Tuggeranong Little Athletics Club and not prioritise the construction of an unnecessary carpark,” Ms Lawder concluded.
