Canberra has again been named the most expensive capital city in
Australia to rent a house or unit, according to the Domain Rental Report for
the June 2021 quarter.
Canberrans are being hit with record high rents of $630 per week, surging by
$60 in the last 12 months.
Shadow Housing Minister Mark Parton says that renters are being left behind by
the Labor-Greens Government as rents continue getting pushed up each year.
“The reality is that Canberrans are being slugged with higher rent every single
year because of this Labor-Greens Government’s huge rates and land tax
increases, and a painfully slow land release program. These costs are being
passed on to renters and its killing them.
“Under the watch of this Labor-Greens Government electricity prices have also
increased and there are thousands of vulnerable Canberrans on our public
housing waitlists.
“The government promised ‘a home for all’ at the last election, but have
already begun walking away from this commitment, now saying this promise was
simply an ‘aspiration’.
“It’s time that this Government acknowledges that there is a housing crisis in Canberra and our most vulnerable are being left to pay the price,” Mr Parton concluded.
