Canberra Liberals Leader and MLA for Kurrajong Elizabeth Lee is calling on the ACT Labor-Greens Government to take action and fix the dangerous intersection on La Perouse Street and Carnegie Crescent at Red Hill Primary as a matter of urgency.
Despite a number of local residents raising serious concerns about safety at this intersection and Ms Lee continually bringing the issue to the attention of the Minister for years, nothing has been done.
Ms Lee has launched a petition in the ACT Legislative Assembly on behalf of residents calling on the Labor-Greens Government to upgrade the intersection to make it safer for children and all road users.
“The serious concerns about the safety issues at this intersection are raised with me continually; by local residents and also by parents of children at Red Hill Primary who walk the area regularly and are seriously worried about how unsafe it is,” Ms Lee said.
“When the primary users of the area are primary school-aged children we must take every precaution to keep them safe and we must do this urgently.
“Traffic has significantly increased in the area which is making it more dangerous for children to walk, scoot or cycle to school.
“There have been a number of car crashes at this spot in recent times, including just last week and local residents are fed up with the Labor-Greens Government continually saying they will look into it and yet doing nothing. And for every serious accident, there are countless near misses.
“This inaction is yet another example of the Labor-Greens Government neglecting basic city services which is having serious consequences for the safety of Canberrans,” Ms Lee concluded.
