Labor’s proposed APS job cuts would pull billions out of ACT economy

The Canberra Liberals are calling on the ACT Labor-Greens Government to protect Canberra jobs following an announcement by Senator Katy Gallagher last week to cut $3 billion from APS contractor and consultant jobs if Labor is elected this month.

Deputy Leader of the Canberra Liberals Jeremy Hanson said it is concerning that these roles, the majority of which are in Canberra, would be replaced by just $500 million in front-line jobs mostly outside the ACT.

“This would equate to the loss of thousands of high skilled jobs in Canberra, along with billions of dollars cut from the ACT economy,” Mr Hanson said.

“All members within the ACT Legislative Assembly should be extremely concerned about this policy announced by the Australian Labor Party and must call on the federal opposition to drop this dangerous plan.

“The Chief Minister and the Greens need to put Canberrans above politics and join our calls to keep these jobs in the ACT.

“The Canberra Liberals will always stand up for Canberra jobs and denounce any policy that threatens to take those jobs away,” Mr Hanson concluded.
