Shadow Minister for City Services Nicole Lawder today moved a motion calling on the Labor-Greens government to investigate what changes must be made to the road maintenance approach to improve the state of ACT roads.
The motion also called on the government to provide residents with a plan to reduce the amount of ratepayers’ money spent on pothole damage claims.
“It’s incredibly disappointing to see the Labor Greens government water down my motion today,” Ms Lawder said.
“Canberrans are understandably frustrated with the state of ACT roads and want to see the government address this issue.
“Instead, we’ve seen the government dismiss community concerns and proclaim that all is fine with ACT roads. Well, I don’t know what roads the Minister’s driving on, but you’d be hard pressed to find a road in Canberra that isn’t riddled with potholes.
“The fact that the Labor-Greens government is having to compensate motorists for the damage caused to their cars from potholes is shameful. Canberrans deserve to know how the government plans to reduce this waste of ratepayer’s money.
“Having safe and accessible roads is a basic municipal service that the Labor Greens Government is failing to deliver. The Canberra Liberals will continue to advocate for a more proactive approach to road maintenance,” Ms Lawder concluded.
