Canberra Liberals Leader Elizabeth Lee today welcomed the passage of the Restoring Territory Rights Bill 2022.
Under Ms Lee’s leadership, the Canberra Liberals have and continue to support the restoration of territory rights.
“Canberrans deserve the right for their local parliament to legislate on this matter,” said Ms Lee.
“We respect the wide range of views on voluntary assisted dying held by the Canberra community. This is an important issue for Canberrans and as members elected by Canberrans to make decisions on behalf of Canberrans, it is right for the ACT Legislative Assembly to have the right to legislate on it.
“Since I became leader, I have had many discussions and urged federal members of parliament to restore territory rights in the ACT.
“I understand it is the intention of the ACT government to introduce the legislation on voluntary assisted dying to the ACT Legislative Assembly in 2023. Any legislation brought before the Assembly must have the opportunity to be thoroughly scrutinised and the wide range of views heard and listened to.
“All Canberra Liberals elected members will vote with their conscience when the legislation is put before the Assembly,” Ms Lee concluded.
