Labor-Greens government once again refuse to rule out car free zones in the ACT

For the second time in less than a month, the ACT Labor-Greens government has refused to rule out the establishment of a petrol-powered car free zone in Canberra within the next decade.

All members of Labor and the Greens voted against a motion put forward by Shadow Minister for Transport Mark Parton which provided the Labor-Greens government yet another opportunity to rule out the establishment of car free zones.

“If they’re not going to establish large petrol-powered car free zones in our city, why do they refuse to rule them out?” Mr Parton said.

“A significant petrol-powered car free zone would have extreme impacts on those on lower incomes, those with a disability and those living in outer suburbs, particularly families with children.

“By once again refusing to rule out petrol-powered car free zones in the ACT by 2030 the ACT Labor-Greens government has made it fairly clear what their intentions are going forward,” Mr Parton concluded.
