Welcome news on FIFA Women’s World Cup

Canberra Liberals Shadow Minister for Sports and Recreation has welcomed the response from the Chief Minister concerning his inquiry for the Government to consider funding the screening of matches on LIVE Sites in Civic for the Matilda’s upcoming games.

Mr Milligan wrote a Question on Notice to the Chief Minister asking why the Government had failed to bid to host FIFA Women’s World Cup games, and asking the him to consider instead funding the screening of the Matilda’s games.

“I was disappointed that the Chief Minister did not seek to host some of the games in person, and asked for the Government to consider the next best thing, to fund the screening of some of the matches LIVE, in key locations in Civic,” Mr Milligan said.

“The very brief response that I have received today has intimated that the Government is in fact considering establishing Lives Sites to screen the Matildas’ matches for the Cup.”

“I welcome the spirit of the response and ask the Chief Minister to not only consider it, but make good on this half promise. Tickets for the matches are selling fast, with many of the early games already sold out of all but the expensive seats.”

“It would be great for this Government to show their support for the Matildas and the people of Canberra by setting up the sites, and letting people know when and where as soon as possible.”

“The games start on the 20th of July and it would be fantastic to be able to watch the opening matches with other like minded people. The football community and myself would welcome the opportunity and ask that the Chief Minister make the announcement to confirm the Live Sites as soon as possible.”

“It is the least this government could do, it has neglected the sporting fans and facilities right across the territory for too long. Let’s get this done,” Mr Milligan concluded.
