Lack of accountability in public procurement remains major problem for Labor-Greens government

The Canberra Liberals welcome recommendations in a committee report released today that highlights the need for improved accountability in public procurement.

The Standing Committee on Public Accounts released their Report on the Inquiry into Auditor-General’s Performance Audit Reports July – December 2023 today.

Shadow Assistant Treasurer, Peter Cain, has pointed to the recommendations handed down regarding the wasteful Human Resources Information Management System (HRIMS) Program and the ineffective Activities of the Government Procurement Board as particularly showcasing the government’s failures in this space.

“This Labor-Greens government have completely failed to properly administer public procurement and are proven to be incapable of instituting appropriate accountability measures,” Mr Cain said.

“The fact that these recommendations even have to be made is unbelievable, but the bar has been set so low by Andrew Barr, Chris Steel, and other Ministers that they must be said.

“These recommendations seek to strengthen and clarify accountability measures and ensure greater independent oversight for independent public agencies. This is about integrity, which is intrinsic to any good government.

“The HRIMS Program will go down as one of the greatest failures of public administration overseen by any ACT Labor-Greens government.

“Canberrans deserve a fresh opportunity to have a government that will ensure public procurement is being conducted in a transparent, accountable and cost-effective manner.

“Elizabeth Lee and the Canberra Liberals are excited to offer that fresh opportunity for Canberra,” Mr Cain concluded.
